An annual fire safety statement is a declaration by or on behalf of a building owner that a
competent fire safety practitioner (CFSP) has:
- assessed, inspected and verified the performance of each existing essential fire safety
measure that applies to the building, and - inspected the exit systems serving the building and found that the exit systems within the building do not contravene the provisions of Division 7 of Part 9 of the Regulation
The purpose of an AFSS is to demonstrate that building owners are complying with the requirement in clause 182 of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Regulation 2000 to maintain their buildings fire safety measures.
By issuing a certificate the building owner is declaring that a competent fire safety practitioner (CFSP) has assessed each measure that is applicable to the building, and that those measures continue to meet the standard of performance required.
Some sections of an AFSS are required to be completed by the building owner (or their agent), while other sections are to be filled out by the competent fire safety practitioner (CFSP) that you have engaged for that purpose. In order to be able to sign off on your buildings AFSS the CFSP will have to attend your site and ensure that the buildings fire safety measures are performing to a satisfactory level.
Once your AFSS has been completed you are required to:
- Submit the AFSS to council
- Submit the AFSS to Fire and Rescue NSW
- Install the AFSS on display at the front entry/entry to premises
- If requested, submit the AFSS to WH&S and insurance suppliers
